TRUTH BASED SCHOOLS
A CO-CURRICULAR APPROACH TO ATHLETICS
“Sports need not be seen as separate from academics; rather they can work hand in hand with academics to educate and equip the whole person” (Ehrmann, 2011).
As an athletics program within an educational institution it is imperative that we follow a CO-CURRICULAR approach. To best serve all parties within a school community, the institutional vision, mission, and the values must be considered to ensure consistency across departments. Programs within an Educational Institution should never be in violation of institutional values and objectives.
In exploring the bigger picture of how athletics programs serve their Educational Institution and the Learning Community we will take a deeper dive into defining the COMPREHENSIVE and INTEGRATIVE aspects of programming.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CURRICULUM!
CONTINUED….
COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMMING:
If we define COMPREHENSIVE as providing “a variety of opportunities and contexts for students to develop in, and achieve, developmentally appropriate outcomes” (Komives, Dugan, Owen, Slack, Wagner & Associates, 2011), then the nature of providing Athletics, along with other “out of class” activities, satisfies the educational requirement of being a “Comprehensive School”.
INTEGRATIVE PROGRAMMING:
INTEGRATIVE refers to “weaving together different experiences, areas of content, and opportunities to create a more complete whole. This incorporates on and off campus, in and out of the classroom and across disciplines” (Komives, Dugan, Owen, Slack, Wagner & Associates, 2011).
In considering this, we have a responsibility as Athletics Directors, and Coaches to INTENTIONALLY connect the purpose and curriculum of the institution itself to our programming!
TRUTH BASED ATHLETICS has done the work For you as A.D.’s, Coaches, and Curriculum Coordinators to connect the TRUTH BASED Vision, Mission, Standards, and Curriculum to that of your Institution.
